My frank assessment: Apart from hindering flow of reading, looking up in 90 percent of the cases did not help much in my understanding of plot development. But a slave to my compulsiveness I had to do the chore of looking up till I finish the book. After a point it became a bigger irritant than “Fair enough”. Although I stopped myself from watching a Finnish documentary without subtitle still instant looking up disturbed my flow of reading a lot. Once one starts by looking up “Electric Brae” they end up only after 5 hours by watching a Finnish documentary without subtitle.Ī confession: I never ever look those underlined words up unless comprehending some expression is pivotal to understand a key point of the book.Īs an experiment, for “Hide and Seek” I decided to instantly look up everything I did not understand while reading. As my vocabulary is terrible if I stop to look up each word I can’t comprehend then I can’t progress beyond one page per hour.
Generally while reading a book I underline words or expressions or references, which I can’t comprehend to look up later. This phrase was not only thing harming my reading experience. However in an otherwise well written book, repetition of this phrase makes reading experience irritating especially if the reader belongs to passionate anti-“Fair enough” group. To be completely honest I have to say, “Fair enough” about the context of most of the “Fair enough”s. There is, on average one “Fair enough” every 10 to 15 pages. My revelation came while reading Hide and Seek by Ian Rankin. Neither this is a recent phenomenon nor an Indian one. It has some how become the multipurpose reply to everything.īut I was mistaken. I feel as if I am flooded with “Fair enough”. I am revolted by the liberal use of “Fair enough” (or some form of it) in Indian English. What is fair? How it is fair? To whom it is fair? And how much fairness is enough? I clarified how I am merely a book blogger with some original writing thrown in. He replied enthusiastically about his relative being “a food blogger too”.
